Darts for beginners: what you need to start at home
Getting into darts is neither expensive nor complicated, once you know what you really need. In this starter guide we go through everything: the board, the darts, the right measurements, protection for wall and floor, and what you can safely skip.

What you need (and what you don't)
The basics are small. With these parts you play tonight, with no regrets afterwards:
- A 45.1 cm sisal dartboard in match size: on it you play like in the darts venue and on TV
- Steel tip darts of 20 to 24 grams: a comfortable starting weight for almost everyone
- A surround ring, because beginner players simply miss regularly
- Something to keep score: a scoreboard on the wall or a free app
- Not needed to start: expensive custom darts, a cabinet around the board or a professional lane
Hang the board correctly straight away
The bullseye belongs at 1.73 metres high, the throw line at 2.37 metres from the front of the board. Do this right from day one: darts is a game of repetition, and whoever stands at a slightly different distance every evening trains a slightly different throw every evening.
Our hanging guide has the complete step-by-step plan with all the measurements. If you would rather the distance is automatically correct, a dart mat with oche sets the throw line right for you.
Choose a starting path that suits you
- As affordable as possible: a complete board set with darts and scoreboard. One box and you can play
- Just start well: board, a 12-piece darts set with four weights and a surround ring. That way you discover your weight without sacrificing your wall
- Done in one go: a complete dart corner with lighting and dart mat included, so you never have to think about it again
The first evenings: how to keep it fun
Do not expect 180s in your first week, nobody does. Play simple games like Around the Clock (throw 1 through 20 in order) or 301, and note your score now and then. As a beginner especially you see progress every week, and that is exactly what makes darts so addictive.
Frequently asked questions
What does getting into darts cost?
A complete starting point with board, six darts and scoreboard is available from a few tenners. If you want wall protection and a multi-weight darts set straight away, count on about a hundred euros.
Is an electronic dartboard better for beginners?
For young children soft tip is safer, but if you want to learn the real game, sisal is the logical choice: the same darts, the same distance and the same feel as everywhere else. Our comparison guide covers all the differences.
Which dart weight do I choose as a beginner?
Between 20 and 24 grams you are fine. If in doubt, choose a set with several weights, and you discover which throws best as you play.
