Hanging a dartboard: the right height and distance
You can hang a dartboard in five minutes, once you know the official measurements. In this guide: the right height, the right throwing distance and a step-by-step plan that gets your board right first time.
The official measurements
For steel tip darts (the classic sisal board), the same measurements apply worldwide:
- Bullseye height: 1.73 metres from the floor
- Throwing distance: 2.37 metres from the front of the board to the throw line (oche)
- Diagonal from bullseye to throw line: 2.93 metres (a handy check measurement)
Step-by-step plan
- Choose a wall with at least 1 metre of clear space around the board and a flat floor in front.
- Measure 1.73 metres from the floor and make a pencil mark: that is where the bullseye goes.
- Fit the mounting bracket according to the manual and hang the board level.
- Measure 2.37 metres from the front of the board and mark the throw line, or lay down a dart mat with oche so the line is automatically correct.
- Click a surround ring around the board before your first throw: misses are part of the game, holes in the wall are not.
Common mistakes
Most home players hang the board too low (measuring from the top instead of the bullseye) or throw from an estimated distance that changes every week. It is precisely those fixed measurements that make practising at home worthwhile: what you throw at home, you also throw on any other board.
Frequently asked questions
Can a dartboard go on any wall?
Almost any solid wall works. For plasterboard, use cavity wall plugs. Do not hang the board on a door, as it will vibrate and is bad for the tips of your darts.
Do I need to mark the distance on the floor?
You can with tape, but a dart mat with a marked oche is more durable, protects your floor and is always exactly right.
