Which dart weight suits you? 20, 23 or 26 grams

The weight of your darts determines how your throw feels and flies. Most players throw between 21 and 24 grams, but the one right choice does not exist: you discover it. Here is how to go about it smartly, without buying the wrong set three times.

Navy Strikes 12-piece darts set with four weights and add-a-gram weights

What weight does to your throw

Light darts (20 to 22 grams) ask for a smooth, active throw and respond directly to your technique. Heavy darts (24 to 26 grams) sit more calmly in the hand and fly more stably, so small errors are punished less.

That is why many players start slightly heavier than they think, and only move to lighter once their throw becomes tighter. There is no right or wrong: there is only the weight at which your darts do what you want.

How to discover your weight

Guessing at one weight is a waste of money. It is smarter to throw several weights side by side, on the same evening, with the same flights and shafts. You usually feel within half an hour which dart flies on its own.

  • Throw at least 30 darts per weight before you judge
  • If your darts land consistently low, the dart is often too heavy for your throw. Consistently high points to too light
  • With add-a-gram weights you make a dart one gram heavier: so you also test 21, 23, 25 and 27 grams without a new set

Rules of thumb per type of player

  • Youth or players with a fast, smooth arm movement: 20 to 22 grams
  • In doubt? Start around 23 grams, one of the most popular weights
  • Calm, powerful throw: 24 to 26 grams for maximum stability

Frequently asked questions

What is the most chosen dart weight?

Around 23 grams. Professionals throw anything between 12 and 26 grams, but for home use 21 to 24 grams is the happy medium.

Can I adjust the weight of my darts?

Yes, with add-a-gram weights that you screw into the barrel. Every Navy Strikes darts set has them in the box as standard, so you find your ideal weight to the gram.

Does the shape of the barrel matter too?

Certainly: the grip determines how the dart rolls out of your fingers. That is why our 12-piece sets have several grip profiles, so you can compare weight and grip in one go.
